Providing your child with numerous literature rich experiences at an early age, or better yet at a fetal age, aids in your child’s development of language and reading ability.
Some of the ways to foster a young child’s reading are:
1. Reading Aloud
2. Model Reading
3. Listen to books on tape
4. Sing and listen to music
5. Use the alphabet letters and place left to right
6. Have your child repeat words and touch the object of the word repeated
7. Ask questions
8. Let you child figure thinking problems out on their own with support
As your child begins to pick up books and begins to look at pictures it is helpful for you to model reading and how to handle books. You don’t want to stifle your child, but at opportune moments when your child is focused, show them and talk about the following aspects of books:
1. Model reading left to right
2. Model turning the pages
3. Model holding the book right side up
4. Talk about each picture and what is happening in the picture…use picture clues to tell a story
As your child starts developing his or her reading skills:
1. Continue modeling and reading aloud
2. Point to the words as you read
3. Choose books that have few words and pictures that match the words on the page
4. Have your child point to and repeat the words
5. Continue to use pictures to take a picture walk (talk about each picture)
6. Start asking questions about what your child thinks may be next? (making predictions)
As your child further develops his or her reading skills:
1. Continue modeling and reading aloud
2. Ask more critical thinking questions? Use how and why…
3. Rotate reading pages
4. Tape record your child reading so he or she can hear herself/ himself
5. Reread to increase fluency and readability
And of course provide positive reinforcement and interesting books! Good luck and happy reading!
